ALL ABOUT Blockley WI

The WI is at the heart of village life and during its 86 years of existence
has made its mark in Blockley. But most of all, we enjoy each other’s
company and welcome newcomers to the village.

If you’re new to the village the WI is the way to make friends and get
to know your neighbours quickly.

Who are we? We’re a diverse and friendly group – some of us have lived
in the village most of our lives, others are newcomers. Some of us work,
some are retired, others are housewives. Some of us have been
secretaries, gardeners, shop assistants, teachers, journalists, or kept
a B&B while yet others are more adventurous and have played hockey
or tennis, kept a cafe, or even sailed round the world on a cargo boat.

What do we do? We enjoy ourselves – with talks on everything from
travel and animal actors to wartime Blockley. We enjoy sociable
get-togethers, shopping and theatre trips, Scrabble, demonstrations
of flower arranging, make-up or cookery. We meet for coffee at the
Great Western Arms or the village shop/café and hold bring and
buy sales. We also fight for Blockley causes and support village fetes.

We’re forward-looking –

We’ve just completed a survey of members’ likes and dislikes so
we can plan a programme that has something for everyone

We’ve just started a twinning link with a WI in North Staffordshire

We plan to re-print a very successful Blockley WI publication:
'Blockley – the Past Recalled'.

We’ve just got ourselves a web site - So it’s not surprising
that our membership is going up

A warm welcome awaits you at our meetings held on the
first Thursday of each month in St George’s Hall, at 7.15pm.

See right for details or on the WI notice board
opposite the shop in Blockley.
We look forward to meeting you.

Blockley WI - February Report
Viola Stubbs

In welcoming its first new members of the New Year to its January meeting,
Blockley WI very much hopes that this expansionist trend will continue throughout the coming year.

The evening started with delicious fish and chips, cooked and delivered to St George’s Hall
by the new tenants of the Great Western. It was generally agreed that they tasted ‘better than ever’.

Greasy fingers wiped, there followed a lively hour of Scrabble. After a cautious start, everyone entered into the spirit of the game and a surprisingly competitive edge developed. The highest score was achieved by Mary Graham, followed by Christine Cranke and Hilary Thornborough.

The highlight of our February meeting was a talk by Nigel Moor, entitled ‘Russia’. In view of the near Siberian
conditions into which members had so gallantly ventured out, the focus of the evening was surprisingly appropriate!

Russia’s extreme winter temperatures did not, however, feature in a presentation which took members
on a most interesting tour of the iconic buildings for which St Petersburg and Moscow are renowned.

Nigel’s very well-illustrated talk gave members the opportunity to view the fascinating and highly colourful
architecture of two of Russia’s great cities through the eyes of a real expert.
